THE 10 STATES AMERICANS FLED FROM IN 2016

[1/24/17]  Americans are migrating to rural regions and small towns and abandoning highly urbanized areas and the rustbelt.

Data from United Van Lines’ 40th Annual Movers Survey shows Americans mostly prefer the country and the West to the big city and the East.

The biggest trend United found was a continued migration out of the Northeast; four of the 10 “outbound” states – that is, states that Americans are fleeing — are in that region. New Jersey ranks No. 1, with 63 percent of United Van Lines traffic being outbound.

Residents in 2016 also wanted out of New York (63 percent), Connecticut (60) and Pennsylvania (56).

The top inbound state was South Dakota (68 percent of moves being inbound). Following is United Van Lines’ list for top inbound states for 2016:

  1. South Dakota
  2. Vermont
  3. Oregon
  4. Idaho
  5. South Carolina
